Farm Share or Working Farm Share - $375 / $340

Picture
Rows of Winter Squash.
Harvested fresh for a 10-week season, beginning in August, this traditional CSA farm share includes an array of seasonal organically grown vegetables, from fresh salad greens in the spring, tomatoes in the summer, winter squash in the fall, and so much in between. Diversity is our mantra! The Farm Share strives to include over 25 types of vegetables and over 50 varieties to include delicious staple vegetables (such as white-fleshed potatoes, red slicing tomatoes, mild green peppers, and sweet orange carrots), and unique heirloom varieties that our members love, adding rich, delicious color and flavor to our vegetable options. Chelsea Morning Thymes, our weekly newsletter, and the Chelsea Morning Thymes Recipe Book provides food and farming education, farm photos, personal wit, wisdom and story through weekly musings, and recipes to help you prepare the food delivered each Monday of the week.

MARKET-STYLE FARM SHARE - JULY, PAY FOR WHAT YOU ORDER!

During the month of July, before the traditional CSA season begins, farm share members receive a weekly email with a link to an easy-to-use online form that lists, with photos and helpful descriptions, what produce is available that week. Members order what they want, in the quantity they want it in, only paying for what they order. Deliveries are made using the same CSA sites on the same day of the week as the traditional farm shares.

The Market-Style Share recognizes that our farm "lives" in a cold pocket of the north shore with heavy, wet clay soil, taking awhile each spring and the early part of summer to warm up! At Chelsea Morning Farm, July production is generally heavy with delicious spring "greens" of lettuces, kale, Swiss chard, collards, and Chinese cabbages, along with strawberries and occasional other crops (depending on the seasonal variability of weather). The unique market-style share structure puts some control back into the hands of our members, who can order and enjoy as much or as little of their greens as they wish. July is a special month for the farm as these "spring" crops welcome summer back to the region!

Never Summer Sugarbush Maple Syrup Share - $36 - Growler, $20 - Quart, $12 - Pint

Picture
Chelsea Morning Farm collects and processes, over a wood-fired evaporator, 100% pure maple syrup from 2,500 sugar maples located 20 minutes from the farm on the Drummond Grade. Bottled as Never Summer Sugarbush, it is an farm enterprise that Cree and Jason are very passionate about! That passion was instilled by their mentor Phil Cook, who shared his knowledge of sugaring through a six year working relationship with Cree and Jason in preparation to take over the operation when Phil could no longer do the work. Phil passed away in 2013, but because of his forethought and teaching, the operation not only continues, but grows, still today.

EXCITING NEWS! NEVER SUMMER SUGARBUSH WON 1ST PLACE IN A MAY 2019 SYRUP CONTEST HELD BY THE MN MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING, AND 2ND PLACE IN THE NOVEMBER 2019 SYRUP CONTEST HELD AT THE NORTH AMERICA MAPLE SYRUP COUNCIL AND INTERNATIONAL MAPLE SYRUP INSTITUTE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. EVEN THOUGH IT WAS 2ND PLACE (NOT 1ST) THIS WAS A TREMENDOUS HONOR FOR US! OUR SYRUP WAS COMPETING AGAINST VERMONT, QUEBEC, MAINE, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ONTARIO, NEW BRUNSWICK, AND ALL OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES (4 TOTAL) AND US STATES (14 TOTAL) THAT PRODUCE MAPLE SYRUP!

Lake Superior Herring - $5/lb for Fillets, $8 for Trout Fillets, and $8/lb for Fishcake

Herring Fishing on Lake Superior
We are excited to bring members fresh Lake Superior herring! Jason received his commercial license three years ago after completing a 2-year apprenticeship program required by the DNR. He has been fishing on his own each winter (and for brief periods in the spring and summer) and has had fantastic reviews and high demand for his fish fillets and fishcake batter! Herring is a wonderful white, flaky fish; not too oily and not too dry. It is low on the food chain, thus low in mercury and bio-accumulates, making it a healthy fish to eat. It is great for baking, frying, soups, smoked and yes, pickled! Fishcake Batter, a new product we developed last year, is a traditional Scandinavian treat of ground fish, special spices and other batter ingredients.Like the fillets, it comes frozen in 1lb vacuum-sealed packs. Members turn the batter into patties and fry it up into traditional fishcakes (or fish burgers). We don't offer a traditional share of fish, but rather, when Jason is fishing (and the fish are catching!), we let our members and non-members know. At that time, orders can be placed by those who are interested.

Honey Share from Boreal Apiaries - $20 - Quart, $12 - Pint - Raw Wildflower Honey

Yuuki Working With His Bees
Meghan and Yuuki Meghan and Yuuki are 2010 Lake Superior Farm Beginnings graduates who we’ve grown close with. We are excited to be supporting them in the development of their farm enterprises! Drawing from Yuuki’s childhood experience keeping bees and their current landless situation, Meghan and Yuuki decided to begin their farming venture with honeybees; an enterprise that can be kept using a variety of apiaries (bee yards). The honey is gathered by their bees from wildflowers of the prairie savanna of central MN and this season, honey may be gathered from wildflower and vegetable pollination from Chelsea Morning Farm where Meghan and Yuuki plan to keep bees! They are very careful about leaving the colonies with plenty of honey for the winter to better ensure their survival without the use of supplemental feed. Yuuki and Meghan believe that their bees are healthiest by eating natural “bee food”. They do not treat the production hives with any  chemicals and are selective in locating apiaries. They do not filter or heat the honey; keeping it raw, natural and delicious!

Wild Rice Share - $12 - lb Hand-Harvested Spirit Lake Wild Rice

Picture
Chelsea Morning Farm continues to partner with Bruce and Tawny Savage and the Savage Family, Fond du Lac tribal members, of Spirit Lake Farm and Native Products to provide you with high quality wild rice from the Lake Superior region. The Savage’s have been   harvesting and finishing wild rice for generations. It is done in small, individual batches, processed the day it comes off lakes located throughout northeastern Minnesota. If you haven’t tried true hand-processed wild rice, this is your opportunity! The store-bought varieties don’t compare. It’s delicious!
